What is Thrush?A suppressed immune system is often the culprit for an outbreak of thrush. It is caused by an overgrowth of yeast called candida, which is healthy in its normal state but problematic when it overgrows. When it grows too abundantly in the body, it can develop into a fungal infection, attacking moist areas of the body with fungus. People suffering from chronic illnesses and who take medications, particularly a lot of antibiotics, are more likely to develop thrush. The reason is they have a weakened immune system due to the illness and also due to the fact that the overuse of antibiotics can destroy good bacteria protecting the body. When the good bacteria is destroyed, the bad bacteria takes over and starts wreaking havoc within the body. In a worst-case scenario, a person with an extremely weak immune system may develop a life-threatening blood or organ infection caused by the body's inability to control or eliminate the thrush from its system.
